Update from Les pm Tuesday 28nd March
As far as Steve goes he seems to be doing as well as can be expected. He is able to move around slowly with the help of a "walker". He is however still struggling with his kidneys which where damaged. His condition seems to be stable though. Update from BC pm Thursday 22nd March
Steve has been moved back onto the dialysis machine. We hope that this is just to give his Kidneys some assistance and not anything more serious.
Update from Annie Day - PM Monday 20th March Hi Everyone Sorry no update yesterday..I couldn’t get onto Justine the couple of times I tried to call. In the build up to the cyclone yesterday Steve was moved out of ICU into a ward(not sure why) Yesterday they took about 4 hours to pull everything out of Steve bar Cathada and one drip. Justine said it was a bit of a tense moment as they didn’t know whether his body would just take over or not. He is doing well without all his tubes etc so that is a relief. He had the bloodtest that I mentioned in the last email and the malaria is all but gone. His kidneys are functioning but not to capacity. The jaundice has gone but he still remains a bit puffy mainly in his feet. He had had a bad infection in his eye due to puffiness causing eyelashes to go into the eye but this has all settled down now. Justine said he has settled right down and not anywhere near as agitated as he had been. The dialysis finished last night and things are going well there. He is having longer periods of wakefulness but is very weak. Justine said Steve is beginning to realize he is a very sick man and that he will take a lot of time to recover. When he gets out of hospital, perhaps at the end of the week, he will reside in Gordonvale where he will stay until he has completely recovered. He will still have the cathada for about 6 weeks That’s about all for now To make things worse Gordaonval got hit pretty badly by the cyclone and Pat(Justine’s mum) lost part of her roof. There is a mob of neighbours now putting on a tempory roof before the rain depression starts Take care and stay in touch Cheers Annie
Extract from Justine's email:
"From today - 18/03/06 I will be at the hospital during the day and at night I will be at my mothers place. Steve is now stable and I no longer need to be at the hospital through the night. I'm unsure as to when I will return, it will depend on Steve's progress - once he comes out of the Intensive Care Unit I will speak with the Dr and see what they advise.
Please pass on my thanks to all the staff for their thoughts and prayers.
Justine" Latest from BC (Thanks BC) Sat 18th Visited Steve yesterday and will be going again this afternoon. They have controlled the malaria however still a lot of concern with internal bleeding and the damage to internal organs caused by the malaria. Blood is starting to coagulate and they performed a microscopic inspection late afternoon which I am not sure of the results but nurses did say they were able to correct and fix a few problems whilst they were there. Is suffering renal failure and was being connected to a dialasys (sorry about spelling) machine which they are hoping will only be a temporary arrangement. He is still receiving blood transfusions. He is still lapsing in and out but he did recognize me and gave me a smile. Justine is basically there 24/7 except for the few hours Pat comes to relieve her so so can go home and shower etc.I have passed onto Justine all the support from PNG. Theo is going back to Brissie today or tomorrow which is a good indication he has passed that stage but a very long way to go. The medical staff don't tell or give opinions too freely and when they do it can vary throughout the day - makes it difficult to pass on status reports. Latest from Annie day (Thanks Annie) Frid 17th I spoke to Justine again this morning at about 11am(Qld time) Steve had a reasonably restful night although still problems trying to empty bladder. He will be having dialysis today and will most likely be on a dialysis machine for a few days as his kidneys are unable to clean the blood. He was on nil by mouth this morning in case of surgery today after a visit from the euroligist…the eurologist is trying to sort out the problems with the internal bleeding and the problems with prostrate( bleeding) which it seems is directly related to incorrect medical procedures in PNG. He is conscious but very sleepy and weak due to the amount of toxins in his blood as a result of failing kidneys etc I will speak to Justine again in the morning to see what the results of the eurologist visit was. I have passed on all your thoughts and well wishes to Justine which she is passing on to Steve. Justine is grateful for all thoughts and prayers Take care and I shall keep you all posted Latest is that he is stabilising well and while still listed as critical it looks like the news is very positive. We wish him all the best and get well soon.
Many of you would be aware that our good friend Steve Landon is currently in Cairns, Australia for very urgent medical treatment. We wish Steve all the best and a rapid recovery. Latest information (Thursday 16th March - morning) is that he has regained conciousness but is still in a critical condition. Apparently it is a new strain of very virulent malaria and has affected both his Kidneys and Liver and he has lost a lot of blood due to internal bleeding. Please hold off trying to contact him until he is in a better condition. Both Justine and Theo are with him.
